At its recent annual dinner, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce honored Halco with its Business of Distinction Award and its Pass the Torch Award.
Halco was cited as a Business of Distinction for its many contributions to the Phelps community. The company, which was established in 1984, employs more than 100 people in Phelps and throughout the Finger Lakes region.
Halco was also cited for its building expansion and commitment to training and education. The company is in the process of adding 12,000 square feet to its headquarters office and shop facility on County Road 7. It will house an expanded sheetmetal fabrication shop, offices for its growing staff of engineers and project managers, and a large training facility.
The expansion will be complete by January 3 when the first 25 trainees begin classes. The new school is for displaced workers who are motivated to acquire the skills required to enter the plumbing and HVAC trades. A full time instructor has been hired to teach the courses eight hours/day (3 hours classroom and 5 hours hands-on), five days/week for 25 weeks.
The Pass the Torch Award was presented to Halco as an outstanding example of family business ownership. The business, owned by Hal and Tammy Smith, employs Hal’s father Harold, his brothers Paul and David, sons Seth and Brock, and Tammy’s brother David Granger.
Halco has grown over the past 23 years to become one of the largest employers in Phelps. The company’s service area stretches from Rochester to Utica and from Watertown to Binghamton. Besides installing and servicing home comfort systems, Halco designs and installs comfort systems in many commercial and industrial buildings throughout the Finger Lakes and Central New York.
