Watch the VideoGeothermal heat pump systems are probably the most important renewable heating and cooling technology for homes in New York. Geothermal heat pumps function by using the constant temperature of soil below the frost line to provide heating in the winter or as a sink for cooling in the summer. Our region has an excellent geothermal resource, and like solar, this resource is widely distributed.
The heat pump is familiar refrigeration technology, and it uses one unit of electricity to extract 3-5 units of heat from the ground. This ability gives these systems an effective efficiency of 300 to 500 percent, which is also referred to as a coefficient of performance (COP). For reference, this would be compared to a high-efficiency condensing boiler's efficiency of 96%. Geothermal systems can typically meet 70 to 100 percent of a client's current building heating, cooling, and domestic hot water (DHW) needs.

In many ways, a geothermal heat pump (GHP) works just like an air-source heat pump. It’s an electrically powered device that pumps a refrigerant compound through compression and evaporation cycles in order to move heat from one location to another. (Your refrigerator also works like this.) The main difference is that a GHP uses the ground (not the air) as the heat source and heat sink.
At a depth of 6 ft. or more below the earth’s surface, the soil temperature will always be between 45 and 75 degrees, whether it’s summer or winter, whether you’re in Florida or New York. An air-source heat pump becomes inefficient at supplying heat when outside temperatures drop below freezing. This never happens with a GHP; that’s why a GHP can operate at very high efficiency all year long.

Principle components of a system include earth or ground loops, the heat pump (including a compressor, condenser, and evaporator), a buffer tank with a heat exchanger or air handler, and monitoring system. The monitoring system should include a BTU meter (flow meter and temperature sensors), a digital electrical meter, and integrating software/data logger with web interface.
